Class overview:

Tools & Materials (41min)
Cut through the overwhelming variety of acrylic paints available and understand how to choose the right tubes for what you want to do. Learn how certain paint brushes will help you work more assertively. Learn to spot problems in reference photos.

Value Study (30Min)

Learn how different types of contrast (a lot of one thing, a little of another) can be used to guide the viewer’s attention and create a striking composition for your painting. A value study is a quick and fun, but also valuable, way to record ideas for a future painting.

Small Painting (1hr 16min)

It may be small, but in the first painting we tackle combining multiple unrelated reference photos.

Larger Painting (1Hr 38min)

Four times larger, this painting will take lon ger but its size is an advantage, allowing for sweeping, gestural brush strokes and more leeway to let the paint be itself.

Bonus: Extended techniques (42min)
Spice things up with some alternatives to the paintbrush. Use acrylics to transfer images directly onto your canvas. Learn how sgrafitto, paint knives, decalcomania, rubbing alcohol, salt, collage, and other fun techniques can be used to add strange textures or patterns into your painting.

And, if you are unsure of your drawing skills but still want to jump into painting, a “Camera Lucida” is demonstrated. Once based on a prism and used by some old master painters to sketch out their paintings, now there’s an app for it.

Who is this class for?
This class is for anyone who has already started painting and wants to improve and in particular make their paintings less timid and more expressive.
