Course Overview

Students will learn how to paint owl with a delicate lace in photorealistic fantasy style!
In the Bonus lesson students will learn an alternative way of painting feathers.

This course is segmented into twelve separate lessons and spans over four hours. The beginning of the course will focus on the preparation of materials, references, an understanding of colour, composition and design. This will provide you with building blocks that you can apply later in the course and into your future painting practice.
You will then be instructed how to build the layers of your owl; starting with the face then body, wings and finishing with lace.
The course ends with how to correctly varnish your work.
All reference images are copywrite free and available for you to use.

Lesson Description:

 Lesson 1 – Art Material
This lesson explores the materials and tools I use in my personal art practice.
You will learn:

• The best substrate choices for galleries
• How to use wetting agent
• An introduction to Golden Paints
• Brush choices and functions
• Palette choices
• Problem areas with varnishes

 Lesson 2 – Composition and Design
This lesson will introduce you to some basic Photoshop tools I use to construct my images as well as the Principles of Composition.
You will learn:

• Selection tools
• Masking tool
• Layering
• Compositional rules for image design

 Lesson 3 – Surface Preparation
Lesson Three is specifically about how to transfer your design onto the substrate and how to prepare the substrate itself in readiness for painting.
You will explore:

• Applying layers of gesso and sanding
• Gridding technique

  Lesson 4 – Palette Preparation
This lesson explores how to get your palette ready for painting as well as identifying correct colour choices for future colour mixing.
You will learn:

• Colour theory
• How to create a Black mix
• Adding wetting agent to water
• Brush care
• Preparing a Sta Wet Palette
• Identifying correct colour matches using Photoshop

 Lesson 5 – Building the Surface
This lesson specifically explores underpainting and blocking in colours for the face of the owl. You will learn:

• Painting from background to foreground
• Layering with different brush sizes
• Layering from darker to lighter colours 

Lesson 6 – Layering and Definition
This lesson introduces the importance of adding detail and contrast into your painting.
You will learn:

• Painting reflections in eyes
• Overpainting feather textures
• Glazing techniques
• Colour combinations for beak painting 

Lesson 7 – Building the body
This lesson will explore how to use layers to create an impression of soft feathers on the chest of the owl. You will learn:

• Directional brush work
• How to create shadows and highlights to suggest form
• Natural looking feather patterns 

Lesson 8 – Wing Base Coat
 Lesson Eight will demonstrate how to map out colours and feather shapes on the wing of the owl in preparation for the detail you will apply in the subsequent lesson. You will learn:

• Underpainting and blocking in colour
• Deepening shadows
• Outlining feather shapes

  Lesson 9 –  Wing Details
This lesson focusses specifically on how to add patterned details and highlights to the wing of your owl. You will learn:

• Pushing back highlights with glazes
• Balancing detail and softness
• Cool verses warm highlights
• Feather patterns

 Lesson 10 –  Lace
Lesson Ten demonstrates the process for painting two different types of lace texture. We will firstly build layers of lace around the wings and then progress around the face of the owl.
You will learn:

• Colour mixing for light, mid and dark lace tones
• Fabric details
• Lace highlights and shadows
• Glazing for layered fabric texture

 Lesson 11 – Bonus Lesson
This bonus lesson goes into further depth in the creation of a small scale feather study. The reference uses similar colour combinations that you have used in the previous lessons to allow for ease with colour mixing. This task provides you with an opportunity to learn and apply the following:

• Functions of different sized liner brushes
• Opaque layering and glazing of feathers
• Definition and highlights for quills and barbs
• Balancing details and softer brushwork
• Working with shadows

 Lesson 12 – Varnishing
This brief lesson will provide you will an overview of my varnishing method.  You will learn:

• Canvas preparation for varnishing
• Varnish application
• Brush care
• Brand choices

About the artist:

Rachel Favelle is an Australian Pop Surreal artist and illustrator, living and working from her coastal studio in the Gold Coast.  Growing up in country Australia; surrounded by rugged mountain ranges, dusty roads and watering holes, Favelle spent most of her childhood exploring and making meaning of her environment. She quickly became fascinated by the potential for Art to express those intangible experiences and narratives that unfolded in her mind as a child.
‘While many of my previous bodies of work focused on fairy tales and mythology, it is always the narratives and wonder of my own childhood that keep calling me back. I grew up in a small country town near the Warrumbungle National Park. Sitting around campfires, riding down dirt roads and climbing trees to pick mulberries in my back yard opened my eyes to the beauty in nature. It was an invitation to create my own imaginary worlds in these solitary places and drawing was a perfect way to express this.’
Favelle’s creatures reflect a strong connection to their environment and the history of a land that has been forever changed by colonization. Delicate fabrics such as lace, juxtaposed against Australian flora and fauna, have become a metaphor for the fragility of the Australian environment.
Rachel Favelle has been a repeat finalist in the Art Lovers Australia Art Prize, Lethbridge 20000 Small Scale Art Awards, the Border Art Prize and the Rotary Arts Spectacular. Achievements include awards such as the Sponsors Art Prize, a Highly Commended in Watercolour as well as an artist in residency, feature artist for Easter Arts and an international solo exhibition in Chicago. Favelle has been teaching for twenty years as a Secondary Art Teacher and has completed a Bachelor of Illustration and a Bachelor of Art Education. Her work is now sold across the world in Portugal, Chicago, San Diego, Indiana and New Zealand.
